Bandas norteñas stepping up the rhythm

I got into this band from Culiacán Grupo 360 about three years ago. I think they’re great for a few reasons. First, they use more tone-leading –on both bajo sexto and accordion –and minor chords, which makes the music more emotional and interesting than that produced by older groups relying on the tonic and fifth (except in the case of great singers like Cadetes de Linares). Secondly, they have way heavier rhythm than those old bands. It turns out that there’re more than just this one group who’re stepping up the rhythm in the northern cities. I found this other band just now called Enigma Norteño, who also have a full drum kit powered by an artistic drummer, and for some reason two bajo sextos. What unites these two latter groups is a super-slick Youtube video producer who loves Go-Pro, name of Servando. I can’t find out anything about the person, though. It’s not just that the sound is busier, but it’s constructed really well, and people who like punk or whatever heavier rhythm can enjoy it. Go listen to it! One funny thing about these clean-cut youngsters playing corridos is that I’m just not convinced by them, with their fancy new instruments, singing about drug trafficking and dying in a senseless hail of gunfire. But we have to remember that singing narcocorridos is a genuine cultural product of the Mexican north, and as such is better than singing about me and these other 12-year-olds are taking over an adult disco, and having a lost Friday night, and whatever the fuck Hollywood is selling. We’ll see if any of these new bands extend to playing their heavy norteño sound beneath other themes, even new themes. Eco-corridos?
