For those of you interested in old blues, Negro Spirituals, etc., I just now (!) found out about Sister Rosetta Tharpe while cruising Youtube.
Joking at her piano player while probably making up lyrics, ripping on a brand new electric guitar, and asking the audience if they remember her –remember, this is obviously the folk revival days in the video. But the best part is around one minute in when the audience starts to clap along and she raises her finger like “SILENCE HONKIES!”
Closest thing I ever got to something like this was about 10 years ago when I got to go to a show put on by Friends of Negro Spirituals in Oakland. A very old Odetta played in this church. It was transcendent, to say the least.
